spreading KINDness this thanksgiving.

KIND. A brand after our own heart, what with their hip, colorful packaging, their delicious (and always gluten-free) bars, their do-good vibe, and now — makeshift seed mix no more! — Healthy Grains cereal-cum-snack mix-cum-granola.

wholesome chow gf mixes.

Wholesome Chow is a relatively new line of baking mixes we’ve seen hitting shelves, and while all of their mixes are organic and vegan — with fairly-sourced and high-quality ingredients — a handful of these mixes are also gluten free. Twofer!

grilled salsa.

Grilled salsa?! Sounds messy, right? To an unknowing ear, the phrase might conjure visions of pouring a jar of salsa over the grate of a hot barbeque. Hmm. There are some logistics to work out there.

celery cucumber salad.

We like things that do double-duty: kitchen tools that have multiple purposes (consider a wire cooling rack that can also cook bacon in the oven), easy-to-prepare dishes that can go alongside myriad mains or can be combined with another dish to create something entirely new. Consider this celery cucumber salad. It can be whipped up in a matter of moments, and it’s equally at home alongside chicken or sausages straight from the grill OR on top of oven-roasted potato coins as a little pre-dinner gnash or as a more substantial sidedish.

peak of the season corn chowder.

Tender young corn is one of the finest indulgences come summertime (and we’re all about savoring every last bit of summer). If you happen to grow corn, you know that it grows best in large plots, which means you have a. lot. of. corn. You might even say you’ve got corn coming out your ears (nyuk!). So if you are a grower of corn, or if you just like to buy it at the store where you can purchase as little or as much as you like, we hope you’ll give this chowder a go.

avocado coconut popsicles.

Summertime. When it feels like all you ought to be doing is hanging around barefoot munching on fresh stonefruit, lazing on picnic blankets, drinking from tall glasses of sweet tea, napping in gently swinging hammocks, and eating fresh popsicles.

flowers are vegetables, too.

You’re familiar with the old adage, when life gives you lemons make lemonade?

Yesterday The Lab’s kitchen garden was ruthlessly attacked by a rogue gopher, leaving behind one fallen nasturtium plant. This after just having painstakingly lined the entire garden with impenetrable gopher wire. This after seeing the first couple of blossoms on our nasturtium plants and rejoicing the start of our edible flower crop.

fresh cilantro & roasted pepita pesto.

Ah, cilantro. Some of us can’t get enough; others describe its taste as a soapy mess in their mouth. And for those folks we might suggest turning a blind eye to the cilantro in the case of this one simple recipe, as this cilantro & roasted pepita pesto, from Whole Foods‘ seafood booklet, doesn’t boast an all-up-in-your-face cilantro flavor. Rather, the herb gets mellowed by the roasted pepitas, which are the real carrier of flavor.

kelp noodle salad with baked tofu.

Kelp noodles, huh?

Before you dawg us and declare us hopeless California hippies, imagine this: a noodle that is cool & refreshing, crispy like a mouthful of sprouts and neutral in flavor. It could very easily be an alternative noodle in your run-of-the-mill Vietnamese Bún, or it could just be a member of the supporting cast in soups and stir frys.

gluten-free baked tofu with sweet potato curry

That right there? That’s lunch! This was a surprise hit born out of starving necessity last night…a quick throw-together Sunday evening meal that did NOT lack in flavor and produced just enough leftovers to make it to the office for lunch. It’s 4 o’clock. Is that too soon to be hungry for more tofu & curry?
