We don’t know why it’s taken us so long to subscribe to Living Without: the magazine for people with allergies and food sensitivities. But our first subscription-based magazine came today, and we’re impressed! Great-looking recipes (and lots of ‘em!), a good number of kid-oriented or kid-based features, GF product advertisements (we like the ads because it helps us keep on top of what’s new in the GF world!), GF travel tips, product coupons, updates from diet and science experts, and lots more.

Hop on over to The Kitchn to see a fascinating interview, brimming with photos, with Bob of Bob’s Red Mill. After reading this, we’re a tiny bit tempted to swoon “our hero!” in true damsel-in-distress fashion. Except that we’d be gluten-free damsels in distress!

The USDA has just rolled out a bright new graphic that is meant to replace the good ol’ food pyramid. It’s a food plate! Or, er, the health plate…or…hmm, not quite sure what to call it, but to us it looks like a simple, clear graphic that can be a handy tool for folks learning about nutrition. Today’s Huffington Post article says, “Government officials, including First Lady Michelle Obama who was on-hand for its launch this morning, hope the new graphic will serve as a simple ‘how-to’ for making food choices by providing a clear breakdown of what our plates should look like.”

Listen up local folks! If you haven’t been to an event where Gerard’s Paella is front & center (a Sonoma County local’s wedding, for example, or The Great Handcar Regatta), then you might not be quite as excited as us to learn that Relish Culinary Adventures in Healdsburg, Calif. has snagged him for a couple of paella cooking classes over the next couple of months. This weekend’s May 27 class is sold out, but act early for the upcoming June class to make sure you get a spot! The deets are these:

A new site! Where you can locate or rate a restaurant based on its level of “allergy friendliness”! Allergy Eats is in its beta-testing phase and has plans to include more features than what’s currently online…although that’s not to say that there aren’t already a number of valuable resources included on this site. The primary feature we’re impressed by is how one might search or rate restaurants that offer allergy-friendly dining. As a user, you’re first prompted to choose your allergen(s) from the list provided, including peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten, fish, shellfish, sesame and soy.

There is one member of The Lab who claims to have earned a Chinese heritage by virtue of her deep and undying love for dim sum. She is the fuel that fires our need for gluten-free dim sum, which, truthfully? is a totally unreliable gluten-free dining-out experience. (If you have a dim sum place you like and know for sure that gluten-free ingredients and practices are being observed, we implore you to share with us!)
