Wholesome Chow is a relatively new line of baking mixes we’ve seen hitting shelves, and while all of their mixes are organic and vegan — with fairly-sourced and high-quality ingredients — a handful of these mixes are also gluten free. Twofer!

It seems like we always hear about new gluten-free items appearing in the vast aisles at Costco. We get super excited, make a trip during the craziest weekend hours, and then we aren’t able to unearth what we were there for in the first place, yet wind up checking out for hundreds of dollars. WTF, how does that happen?!

We’re fortunate enough to have the amazing! incredible! unbeatable! Puerto Rican restaurant Sol Food within driving distance, but it’s a good 45-minute trek from our home base. Some desperate evenings when we’re really jonesing for a cubano sandwich, we’ll pull together what it takes to make our own rendition: the Copa Cubano.

This time of year is a tomato time of year in northern California. We pull copious numbers of still-warm tomatoes straight off the vine. Some get canned. Some get made into sauce. Some get eaten right there in the garden, our bodies bent at the waist, the juices falling back into the earth.

Not for the faint of heart, these meaty maraschino cherries are a breeze to whip up and make for an unexpected treat at the bottom of a Shirley Temple, Manhattan or our very own Ruby Tuesday.
To make your own marashino cherries:
- Choose a glass jar with a tightly-fitting lid
- Pit enough fresh cherries to fill a jar (pack them tightly!)

Grilled salsa?! Sounds messy, right? To an unknowing ear, the phrase might conjure visions of pouring a jar of salsa over the grate of a hot barbeque. Hmm. There are some logistics to work out there.

Could a breakfast GET any better than a Dutch Baby (aka German Pancake) hot out of the oven, garnished with nothing more than drippingly sweet peaches?!
No. No, it could not.
In light of the holiday weekend, we urge you to give this one a go, and to enjoy it again and again. Saturday with berries and powdered sugar; Sunday with vanilla yogurt and sliced peaches; Monday with cooked apples with cinnamon, sugar and walnuts. You pretty much can’t go wrong.

Bon Appetit’s gluten-free feature was a little sparse on recipes to really be considered a feature, but still. GLUTEN-FREE IS SO MAINSTREAM! Loving it. And we loved these lentil cakes. Whipped ‘em up Friday night — with ingredients we had on-hand in our kitchen, how amazing is that?! — and num-num-num-ed our way through them. Not a crumb went uneaten.

Check out this feature blog from Bon Appétit magazine. Quinoa has DEFINITELY made the mainstream. Go ancient grain, go!

We’ve a garden that’s bursting with healthy greens and a Gravenstein apple tree that’s loaded to the gills — if apple trees had gills — with fruit. Time to put that home-grown goodness to good use!
This meal is a quick one to whip up, hearty, and speaks to the coming of autumn (gulp!).
