choose my plate campaign. the new food pyramid.

June 2, 2011

The USDA has just rolled out a bright new graphic that is meant to replace the good ol’ food pyramid. It’s a food plate! Or, er, the health plate…or…hmm, not quite sure what to call it, but to us it looks like a simple, clear graphic that can be a handy tool for folks learning about nutrition. Today’s Huffington Post article says, “Government officials, including First Lady Michelle Obama who was on-hand for its launch this morning, hope the new graphic will serve as a simple ‘how-to’ for making food choices by providing a clear breakdown of what our plates should look like.”

We are fully on board with the new balance of foods and the way they’re represented as actual proportions a human body should consume as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet. What do you think of the new food pyramid?

I still have a hard time with US large emphasis on grains. It seems more appropriate to get carbs from veggies and fruit with a smaller grain portion. Just a hunch. I don’t have an educational background in nutrition, perhaps I just have a lack of knowledge.
