Molly is The Lab’s editor and true benchmark of gluten-free goodness. Since she isn’t afflicted with any sort of food allergy or preference (although she does declare she prefers savories…but we’ve seen how she can chow a cupcake), she’s our go-to-gal for test recipes.
“Does it taste like the real thing,” we ask? “Is the consistency right?”

Waaay back in January The Lab had a run-in with some serious rock stars at the Fancy Food Show. The booth was groovy, the samples were delicious, the products they handed us were plentiful, and the gals working the booth were super sweet. I’m talking about Rock ‘n’ Roll Gourmet, the maker of Hippie Chips, a puffed potato chip in a multitude of tongue-tingling flavors, and Rock ‘n’ Pop, which is decidedly NOT your county fair’s kettle corn.

For the last few years, the notion:creative (our day job) and The Gluten Free Lab headquarters have been based out of an office just three doors down from local ice cream hero Screamin’ Mimi’s. Three doors down. As in: just seventy-two steps. As in: just forty-eight hops. As in: it’s slightly conceivable that if I were to scream my order at the top of my lungs, somebody working the counter might hear my request, fill the order, and deliver my double scoop of creamy coconut sorbet right to my desk (it’s no secret; that’s pretty much my idea of heaven).

This time of year is green-tastic out in the garden. I have leggy chard and kale that survived the winter, beet greens, and a whole lotta greens from my weekly farmbox. This time of year is also lemon-tastic, and when it’s a good lemon year I make EVERYthing with our coveted meyer lemons, ranging from meyer lemon and vanilla bean marmalade to meyer lemon margaritas, to meyer lemon cream pie, to this simple recipe combining all those greens, all those lemons, and the “grain” of the month, almonds. This makes a fantastic pasta stir-in, a stuffing for poultry, or a simple side for fish (you know how much we like fish with our almonds…!).

Last night: exhausted. HUNGRY. Lots of almonds on hand + fresh fish from a cousin in Alaska.
Solution: Epicurious’ recipe for almond-crusted salmon with leek & lemon cream (with some modifications). Here’s how:

We’re such pros by this last photo shoot that we actually have time to sit down with photographer Jessamyn Harris between shots, eat at the table and have meaningful conversation! That means we’re enjoying fruit crisp with coconut granola, vegan cream cheese tart with raspberries (pictured here without the raspberries), steamy popovers, and dutch baby fresh from a cast iron skillet. Is it just me, or is it breakfasty in here?

Just because we’re gluten-free doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the joys of a fresh-baked loaf of bread. The warm, yeasty steam rising off the crispy, browned crust; the first, warm bite of tender crumbs smothered with melted butter and gooey honey. Baking your own loaf of bread – even a gluten-free loaf of bread – is super easy with the bread mixes inundating the gluten-free food market. And in many cases, the results are far superior to what you can get in a pre-made loaf. Here’s an unofficial lab report on what we’ve tried & what we think about what we’ve tried:

We ate our weight in gluten-free samples over the weekend <burp!> and it’s not a stretch to say we felt like a kid in a candy store! There are SO many new kid-friendly GF products on the market, and, yay! We’re finally able to throw a little love to the mom contingent. Here’s just a tiny fraction of what we saw that’s kid-friendly, but know that these select vendors are the products we oooh-ed and aaah-ed over (and tried to sneak an extra little sample!):

It wouldn’t be a food show if we didn’t come home with aching feet and tweaked shoulders from carrying around eco-friendly totes that are absolutely stuffed to the brim with new, exciting, and tried & true gluten-free products. We met new vendors, we saw some of our faves from the Fancy Food Show back in January, and we introduced ourselves to some loyal blog followers whereupon we were warmly welcomed with giant hugs & smiles (we mean you, Heather @ Udi’s!).

We know what you’re thinking: THOSE CRAZY GIRLS ARE AT IT AGAIN?! What can we say, we know how to have a good time. And just look at that little constellation of star cookies that Jessamyn Harris is shooting on the beautiful black countertops at Relish Culinary (and, yes, that’s our very own Heather on the reflector!). We really can’t wait to show off our beautiful photos and share our tasty recipes with you…but soon, dear reader, soon. The cookbook’s due out in early summer.
